Joachim Nicolas Eggert: Sextet in F minor op. 6

Franz Berwald: Grand Septet in B-flat major

Ludwig van Beethoven: Septet in E-flat major op. 20

Composer Joachim Nicolas Eggert made his way directly from Western Pomerania to Sweden. Born in 1779 in Gingst on the island of Rügen as the son of a shoemaker, he served as court Kapellmeister to the Swedish king in Stockholm from 1807 to 1812. He could well be called a "Swedish Beethoven", for as a conductor he gave the first Swedish performances of Beethoven's symphonies and oriented his own music after Beethoven's — and almost simultaneously: in 1808 his Beethoven was first heard in Stockholm, while in Vienna the Fifth was premiered the same year.

The excellent Franz Ensemble — named after Franz Schubert and decorated with the OPUS Klassik for its recordings of rediscovered chamber music — frames Eggert's piece with a magnificent and entertaining Swedish serenade around Beethoven.
